DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng should show transparency by urging fresh elections for its party's central executive committee (CEC) before demanding that Umno elected representatives declare their assets, said Penang Umno deputy chief Hilmi Yahaya.

"Ask Lim not to worry about us. He should take care of his own party matters first," said Hilmi, when met at his Aidilfitri open house event today.

He said Umno elected representatives have no objections to declaring their assets and they have been doing it for a long time.

"We declare our assets to the prime minister. He keeps it in the safe deposit box. It is up to him to make it public," said Hilmi, who is also the deputy health minister and Balik Pulau MP.

Hilmi was referring to the Lim's comment in his capacity as Penang chief minister, that the state government would pay for certified auditors to verify the list of assets should the BN elected representatives agree to publicise theirs as well.

'We'll do in on PM's orders'

On Tuesday, Penang Pakatan's 11 state executive councillors and 40 state assemblypersons publicly declared their assets, a move that was promised in coalition's 13th general election manifesto.

Pulau Betong assemblyperson Muhammad Farid Saad echoed his comrade's sentiments, adding that he would not object if he was asked to declare his assets.

However, that move would depend on the premier, since it was his decision whether to make the declaration public.

"It is a good move (to declare assets), I have no objections to it, we will obliged if the PM asked us to do so.

"But why are only the Pakatan assemblypersons doing it? Their MPs from Penang should also do it," said Farid, when met at Hilmi's do.

As for the state's willing to pay auditors to verify the BN reps assets, Farid shot back: "Get an auditor to verify the CEC election results first".

'Umno has been through worse'

DAP is in trouble over its CEC elections, held in Penang last year, when the Registrar of Societies declared it invalid, after party admitted that there was a technical glitch in its election results announcement.

The ROS had ordered DAP to hold fresh elections on grounds that several disgruntled members had complained about the conduct of the election, held in December.

However, DAP has refused to comply with the order because the ROS has not state legal grounds to compel them to do so.

Hilmi said Umno has gone through worst situation when it was declared illegal in 1988 and had to form a new party.

"This is nothing, it is just a CEC election. DAP should comply, why fight with ROS?" He asked.
