The makers of the controversial local Chinese film ‘ The New Village ’ are hoping that the results of the review by the Film Censorship Board (LPF) will be released after Hari Raya.

The New Village The film’s producer, Edward Tee, said that the authorities have yet to inform the filmmakers of the results of the review.

“We are still waiting and hope that there will be answer after Hari Raya,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted yesterday.

As they are unable to set a new release date, the filmmakers had cancelled a movie-sharing session yesterday.

The event was scheduled to be held at 11am yesterday during a book fair in Kuala Lumpur, where the director, Wong Kew Lit, and some of the main actors of the film were to be present.

The New Village According to Tee, one of the main reasons for the cancellation of the event was that the release date of the film is yet to be decided.

The book fair organiser also told Malaysiakini that the event was cancelled at the last minute, after the filmmakers informed them of this the night before.

The movie was set to hit cinemas on Aug 22, but the release was postponed following complaints by Umno Youth exco member Lokman Adam, who claimed that the movie “glorified communism”.

Following this, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the LPF would have to review the movie again.

The filmmakers have described their product as a “period feature film in Mandarin” that “depicts a forbidden love story”.
