State CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said the 38-year-old man was detained in Alor Setar, Kedah today at 2am.
“A special team set up to investigate the case managed to identify the suspect. Acting on a tip-off, police detained the man in his house early this morning,” he said when contacted in George Town today.
He said preliminary investigation found the man, who was remanded to help in investigation, had several criminal records.
“Further investigations are being carried out including to determine the actual cause of the incident,” he said.
Yesterday at 2.30pm, two women, including a tourist from China, were injured on their legs when they were hit by fragments from an explosion believed to be a homemade firecracker in the parking area in Lorong Love.
Timur Laut police chief, ACP Gan Kong Meng said the explosive was believed to have been placed under a Honda Civic belonging to a man.
During the incident, the owner of the car was having a drink in a shop near the parking lot, and the powerful explosion severely damaged the back portion of the car.
