A civil servant pleaded not guilty at the magistrate’s court to assaulting his wife and injuring her in a lift at the KPJ Bandar Perda Hospital in Bukit Mertajam.  

NONE Magistrate Ariff Mohamad Shariff released the accused Mohammad Affandi Ismail, 36, on a RM5,000 bail with one surety. The unrepresented man paid the bail.  

He is accused of intentionally causing grievous hurt to his wife in the KPJ Bandar Perda Hospital lift, Bukit Mertajam at 4pm on Aug 12, 2013.    

Mohammad was charged under Section 323 which is punishable by a maximum of one year jail or fine of RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.  

The case was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim and remention was set for Sept 12.

The CCTV footage of the assault, which went viral on Facebook and YouTube, showed the suspect punching his wife and knocking her back against the lift.  

It also showed him kicking and slapping her and stomping on her glasses which had fallen down.

The couple’s two children, aged four and five, were seen looking on throughout the two-minute incident.
