Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s defence of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s inaction over Utusan Malaysia’s inflammatory ‘What more do the Chinese want?’ headline “makes no sense”, says PKR communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

NONE This is because Umno, which Najib heads, owns the daily and as such the PM can direct it to move away from its ‘old racist and malevolent strategy’ and instead spread the 1Malaysia message, Nik Nazmi said.

“If Najib is serious about selling his so-called 1Malaysia agenda to Malaysians, particularly the Malay crowd as argued by Khairy, he must play a role as president of Umno and direct Utusan to sell that message. The buck stops with Najib.

“Perhaps it might be difficult for Khairy to take a different opinion due to his role as a member of the cabinet now, but the answer is obvious to the world,” Nik Nazmi said in a statement today.

Utusan

published the controversial front page report , with the headline ‘Apa lagi Cina mahu?’ (What more do the Chinese want?) after Najib declared that the BN’s poor showing in the May 5 general election was due to a “ Chinese tsunami ”.

Khairy in his response to this on Aug 25 said his boss’ ‘Chinese tsunami’ remark was merely an observation on the swing of Chinese voters against the ruling coalition and that the PM was still committed to the 1Malaysia campaign.
