Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud is unperturbed by the registration of five new political parties in the state.

Taib, who is also Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) chairperson, said today the approval of the new political parties reflected the democracy practised in the country.

“I’'s democracy. Anybody can apply and it’s up to ROS (Registrar of Societies) to approve,” he told reporters after handing over a funeral van donated by the Sarawak State Mosque Trust Board to the Miri Malay Welfare Trust Board in Kuching.

Taib was asked to comment on the registration of five new political parties by ROS recently. They are Parti Ekonomi Rakyat Sarawak Bersatu (PERSB), Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru), People’s Alliance for Justice of Peace and Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras).

Asked whether the new parties would pose any threat to the Sarawak BN, he said: “You know the answer.”
