Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) said it plans to unite opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and his nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad to jointly rally against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

This would be the climax of a series of 15 rallies and public lectures that SAMM plans to stage from Sept 17 all across Malaysia, in conjunction with the visit of US President Barack Obama on Oct 11.

NONE "The two have been vocal in calling for the government to reject the TPPA agreement. At the same time, they have also accused each other of being pro-US.

"Let's give them a chance to set egos and domestic politics aside and defend the country's economic sovereignty," said SAMM leader Badrul Hisham Shahrin in a statement.

SAMM said that it had prepared the invitation for the two leaders and would announce more details next week.

It is hoped that Mahathir and Anwar would share a giant stage on Oct 10, the day before Obama visits KLCC.

The road shows were meanwhile organised with a coalition of some 200 NGOs, including the Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM), which had been rallying against the TPPA since July.

TPPA is a free trade agreement currently being privately negotiated by nine countries - United States, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

Malaysia's International Trade and Industry Ministry has denied that it was due to sign the TPPA agreement in October.
