This week's hike in petrol prices will increase the demand for natural gas vehicles (NGV) and thus may increase the installation cost of the cheaper alternative fuel in existing cars, taxi drivers say.
This was voiced by a small group of cabbies who gathered at the Taman Bahagia LRT station yesterday to protest against the petrol hike, claiming that it would further affect their livelihood.
"The installation cost of NGV was initially between RM3,000 to RM5,000. But the cost has now increased to RM7,000," lamented Metered Taxi Drivers Action Body (BBPTB) chairperson Amran Jan.
Amran added that CamPro engines fitted on the latest Proton car models are not exactly suitable for NGV.
"CamPro engines can't support conversion to NGV that well and this leads to frequent services and changes of spare parts," he said.
"This will increase the burden of taxi drivers, and with the petrol hikes, there now comes an increase in spare parts and services costs," he added.
On Monday, the government increased the price of RON95 petrol and diesel by 20 sen to RM2.10 and RM2 per litre respectively, and this was followed by a 15 sen increase in RON97 petrol to RM2.85 per litre two days later.
