The government is studying the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sticker as alternative to Smart Tag to facilitate traffic flow on toll highways.     

Works Minister Fadillah Yusof said it is among government efforts to provide better facilities to road users in the country.

RFID stickers feature a barcode that can be fixed to the windshield of vehicles, are cheap and affordable to motorists compared to Smart Tag.

“This requires the cooperation of many parties, including all stakeholders and highway concessionaires. Public feedback is also important,” he told reporters after opening PSKLM International Conference & Exhibition 2013 at Persada Johor in Johor Baru today.

Fadillah said the government can enforce the use of RFID but its use must first be accepted by all parties.

The concessionaires should also improve the electronic payment system so  that the technology is truly beneficial to all users of RFID.

It is understood that Plus Sdn Bhd is currently testing the use of RFID at Putra Heights toll plaza, with payment made online.

He said the government will improve all roads identified as accident black spots where accidents frequently occur.

However, the road condition is not the main cause of accidents because 60 percent of accidents were due to human error and machine failure.

The three-day conference is attended by 500 delegates worldwide comprising representatives of concessionaires, engineers, contractors, consultants and bankers.
