478,848 pupils sit for UPSR exam
A total of 478,848 pupils are sitting for the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination over three days from today at 8,268 centres in the country.

Some 469,882 of the pupils are candidates at government and government-aided schools while 8,966 are candidates at private schools which use Bahasa Melayu as the medium of instruction.
Up to 49,117 invigilators have been appointed to ensure smooth conduct of the examination, said a spokesperson of the Malaysian Examinations Board.
In KUALA LUMPUR, 21,965 pupils are sitting for the examination at 247 centres in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, said a spokesperson of the Federal Territory Education Department.
Three of these pupils are taking the examination at the Paediatrics Institute of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital as they are unwell and under treatment.
A spokesperson of the hospital said the two male and one female students were sitting for the examination under the school-in-hospital programme at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Eight centres set up in hospitals in Terengganu
In KUALA TERENGGANU, 22,359 pupils, comprising 21,521 candidates of national schools, 434 candidates of national type Chinese schools and 404 candidates of private schools, are sitting for the examination.
Terengganu education director Zakaria Husin said the state had made available 381 centres and 1,988 invigilators.
“A total of 183 candidates with special needs are being given special examination papers, such as in Braille and with larger print,” he said.
He also said that eight centres had been set up in hospitals in the state for pupils undergoing treatment for ailments.
In MALACCA, 14,053 pupils from 239 schools are sitting for the examination.
They comprise pupils from 143 national schools, 65 national type Chinese schools, 21 national type Tamil schools, seven government religious primary schools and three private religious primary schools.
State Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Green Technology and Innovation Committee chairperson Md Yunos Husin said 80 of the pupils were candidates with special needs.
A total of 244 centres and 1,420 invigilators had been made available for the examination, he added.
In JOHOR BARU, 58,335 pupils from 906 government and private schools are sitting for the examination.
Johor education director Mohd Nor A Ghani said 37,854 candidates were from national schools; 19,878, from national type schools and 603 from private schools which used Bahasa Melayu as the medium of instruction.
43,519 candidates in Sarawak
In SARAWAK, 43,519 pupils - 32,737 from the Malay stream and 10,782 from the Chinese stream - are sitting for the examination at 1,289 centres.
State education director Abdillah Adam said 195 supervisors and 4,436 invigilators were involved in conducting the examination.
In KEDAH, state education director Mansor Lat said 36,689 pupils were taking the examination at 573 centres, and 109 of them were candidates with special needs.
“Fourteen pupils are sitting for the examination in several hospitals,” he said.
In KELANTAN, 33,669 pupils are sitting for the examination at 447 centres, 421 of them at government schools and 26 at the Kelantan Islamic Foundation schools, private schools and public and private religious schools.
State education director Hussain Awang said 31,977 of the candidates were from national schools; 945 from national type Chinese schools; eight, from national type Tamil schools; 55 from government-aided religious schools; 264 from the Kelantan Islamic Foundation schools and 420 from private schools and public and private religious schools.
Six pupils undergoing treatment are sitting for the examination at three hospitals, he said.
In PAHANG, 25,896 pupils are taking the examination at 556 centres.
Acting state education director Rosdi Ismail said 86 supervisors were helping to conduct the examination.
