The police have identified a suspect linked to the murder of Customs deputy director-general Shaharuddin Ibrahim in Putrajaya in April this year.

Kuala Lumpur CID deputy director Khairi Ahrasa said the identification of the suspect, aged between 22 and 30, was made via a photograph.

He said the suspect would be hauled up soon but declined to display the photograph as the case was still under investigation.

On April 26, Shaharuddin, 58, was shot dead while travelling in a Nissan SUV on the way to his office in Putrajaya.  

Two men on a motorcycle drew alongside before the pillion rider fired three shots in the direction of Shaharuddin when the SUV stopped at a traffic light in the Lebuh Sentosa/Lebuh Wawasan junction at 8.15am.

Shaharuddin, who was in charge of the Customs and Internal Tax Unit division, was to retire in a year's time.

Having earned the moniker 'Mr Clean', the reputed drug buster's no-nonsense, relentless enforcement could have ruffled feathers leading to his murder.

In another development, the police have detained a couple on Aug 28, for allegedly abusing their 10-year-old son in Jalan Pahang, Setapak in Kuala Lumpur.

Khairi said the traders, aged 51 and 55, were held after a police report was lodged by a teacher of a school in Setapak, a day earlier.

"The teacher found the boy with serious injuries on the body, leg, mouth and head and his parents were called up.

"The school then held an enquiry and found that the boy had been beaten by his parents," he said, adding that the school suspected child abuse and lodged a police report.

Meanwhile, the police detained two suspects under Section 52 of the Societies Act 1966 for fashioning a tattoo with the elements of a secret society during an 'Ops Cantas' two days ago.

"With the two suspects picked up in Brickfields and Cheras, the number of people held under the act now totals 36," said Khairi.
