'Barring Chin Peng's ashes makes us laughing stock'

your say APA INI?: Top people arguing in Chin Peng's favour are Malay leaders who know the Hatyai Agreement and want Malaysia to honour their word. Thank you, former inspector-general of police (IGP) Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor and others for restoring a sense of honesty in the sea of protest from fellow Malays who are baying for blood from a dead man!

Better that Chin Peng lies in peace in Thai soil than have him buried in Sitiawan where his grave will probably be desecrated by the likes of Ibrahim Ali.

Paul Warren: The credibility of agreements entered into by the Malaysian government is at stake. It would seem like not honouring commitments is the new Malaysian value perpetuated by Umno!

But worse still is the fact that the rakyat refused to change the regime - they WANT more taxes, more Tolls and said NO to free education!! I think Malaysia is beyond repair - just look at our PM and the way he talks!

Watchtower: That is a good clarification. Yes, as a nation who have signed the treaty , we should jolly well honour it. The current IGP’s stand, I believe, is the same as the Home Ministry on not honouring the terms of the treaty is worrying from any angle you look at it. "You want to stand tall as a man, be a man then and honour your pledge."

Relevancy: One point that has been raised is how can people of the nation or governments of the world trust that the agreement made would be abided with? As it is we have seen the agreement being reneged at the whims and fancies of the ruling politicians. And these so-called politicians want us to trust them?

Anthony Chan: Umno doesn't care about honouring agreements. They only care about remaining in power through their racist politics. Chin Peng is a useful tool to portray the Chinese as being against Malays and Islam. This will keep those insecure Malays to seek Umno to protect their rights and religion.

Yellow Bird : A communist had an audience with a sultan? Those Perkasa, Pekida and similar NGOs better start foaming at the mouth!

CQ MUAR: Exemplary character of a great leader, albeit retired. Former IGP Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor is a far cry from the present IGP Khalid Abu Bakar. Thus, such are the kind of myopic leaders we have in government. Abdul Rahim is indeed a man of vision and wisdom, who speaks his mind about what the government failed to realise.

Without discrimination and bias, and being a Malay, he bears neither grudge nor hatred against the former communist. The retired cop opined good sense and advice - which PM Najib Abdul Razak and his Umno cronies failed to emulate. Such unforgiving and animosity borne by the PM is a clear example of the kind of leader, and those like-minded ministers we have helming the nation.

What say you Mr PM, in response to the former IGP? Just one other thing: Can the Malaysian PM seek the advice of US President Barack Obama when they meet soon over the controversy? My bet is - he wouldn't dare!

CiViC: Well, being the laughing stock of the world is nothing new to Malaysia, thanks to Umno. The only thing Chin Peng did wrong was to pass away during this time, when Umno leaders are campaigning for support in the coming party polls. Whoever says, "Let’s allow Chin Peng's ashes to go home", will definitely lose his position.

Cala: What if your civilisation is short? Malaysia is not short of laws (formal rules). What Malaysia is short of are informal constraints (norms, belief system, and culture) that allow two transacting parties to do business, reduce costs of business, built-in order, and avoid a "fight". The weak informal institutions explain the low level of trust on Malaysians as most could not honour their pledges.

If someone was robbed of US$500,000 commission over the US$5.0 billion submarine deals, on thinking back, one should not be alarmed. Thus, it is impossible to ask anyone whose civilisation is seen too short to behave as a cultured gentleman. The Nobel Prize co-winner 2009 did said something to the effect that "informal constraints" would take many generations to evolve (Williamson, 1975, 1985, 2000).

Fair Play: The powers-that-be just broadcasted to the world community that honouring any international agreement would always be at their discretion. Now, why would any nation want to enter into any bilateral trade agreement with them? And being a laughing stock is the least of the problems the powers-that-be would face with the international business community.

Dont just talk: The argument presented by the former IGP Rahim Noor separates the men from the boys. Rahim Noor is right when he said that Malaysian politicans failed to recognise the context of the international communist struggle immediately after World War II and the late Chin Peng, like the late Mao Zedong of China, shared similar ideologies.

The communists defeated the nationalists of China, who fled to Taiwan and Mao formed the present day People’s Republic of China. Chin Peng sought peace and like a true leader, agreed to sign the the Hatyai 1989 Peace Agreement. It is a shame that our Malaysian government under Umno, who agreed by signing it but now fails to honour the 1989 Hatyai Peace Agreement, which has made Malaysia a laughing stock to the world.

Why does Malaysia still need to trade with China, a communist country, but does not allow the ashes of the late Chin Peng to be buried in Malaysia? Anwar Ibrahim is right when he said, “Yang sudah, sudah lah”. Let the past be buried so that our nation can move forward to the future.

Hold AWAM Accountable: At the rate that our paranoid BN government is going, Chin Peng is set to become Malaysia's very own Che Guevara. Soon our youth... yes, even mat rempits... will be wearing T-shirts silkscreened with his iconic image. And murals will emblazon the walls of old shophouses in tribute to this 'unforgiven' terrorist.

So what if his ashes are not allowed to pass through our borders? I have news for the government: comrade Chin Peng has already come home.
