The RM983 million Pantai Dua sewage treatment plant in Pantai Dalam in Kuala Lumpur is expected to be operational by 2016.

The deputy director-general of the Sewerage Services Department (SSD), Raja Baharudin Raja Mamat, said the project would enhance the capacity for sewage treatment to 1.432 million population equivalent (PE) from 550,000, as well as being utilised for biogas power generation.

“It will help alleviate the current overload, while providing continuity from the Pantai Satu project built in 1958,” he added at a media briefing at the Pantai Dua site today.

Asked if the hike in oil price would impact the project, Raja Baharudin said it was awarded based on the design and build concept.

“If there is any cost incurred due to this, it will have to be borne by the company undertaking the venture,” he added.

He said the project was under the supervision of the SSD and will be maintained by Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd once complete.

The Pantai Dua project which began in 2011 will incorporate elements of green technology such as the use of treated effluence and power generation through biogas.

Once complete, the 17-hectare facility will feature recreational, sports facilities, a community centre and an administration block, atop the underground treatment plant.

Raja Baharudin said the Pantai Dua project is in line with the government’s mission of achieving the status of a developed nation such as Japan and South Korea, which have long used a similar model.
