The floods in Thailand are expected to worsen as heavy rain is forecast to continue until next week, especially around the northern and eastern regions.

So far, 13 people have died and a total of 2.45 million of its 65 million population affected.

The country’s disaster prevention and mitigation department director, Chatchai Promlert, said eight people died in Surin, three in Srisaket which is located in the north-east part of the country, and two other fatalities were reported in Nakorn Nayok located in the central region.

Based on data for the period Sept 17 to 27, 30 out of Thailand's 77 provinces are affected by flood involving 210 districts and 9,482 villages.

Meanwhile, the Thai Meteorological Department today issued an advisory on the rainfall that it was affected by rather strong pressure from China.

A spokesperson advised the people to be aware of the severe weather during the Sept 30 to Oct 1 period.

He said the tropical depression over the South China Sea, located near the Philippines, was expected to intensify as a tropical storm, moving to middle Vietnam during that period.

This, in turn, would have significant impact on the eastern part of north-eastern Thailand, added the spokesperson.
