Utusan's strategy - smear, apologise, smear again
YOURSAY 'Its apology will not remedy the situation as the damage had already been done. I doubt that this is done out of sincerity.'
Utusan offers public apology to DAP's father and son duo
Sali Tambap:
If
Utusan Malaysia
wants to apologise, the two Lims (Kit Siang and Guan Eng) should accept it. Not that
Utusan
is truly repentant but to deny the apology would play into its hands (and Umno's too).
In any case, the Lims should hold onto the moral high ground and that would be the best path to pursue at this stage. If the case was to go to court, it would not hurt Utusan even if it loses because of its never-ending supply of money from Umno.
As we can see, Utusan would rather run at a loss as long as it stays as a political mouthpiece of Umno. But if it is forced to eat humble pie, it will at least teach them a lesson on ethical journalism.
And that would hurt Utusan and its management more because every professional is proud and possessive of his/her professionalism. Take that away and he/she is nothing.
RB Hisham: The apology will not remedy the situation as the damage had already been done. I doubt that this is done out of sincerity. Believe me, Utusan will continue to defame if given the slight opportunity to do so.
My advice is that the apology must be drafted by Penang CM LGE (Lim Guan Eng) and his lawyer Karpal Singh to reflect conduct unbecoming of the paper with an opening statement such as:
"Seperti yang kerap kami lakukan iaitu memfitnah pemimpin-pemimpin pembangkang dan diputuskan kalah dalam kes-kes mahkamah sebelum kenyataan fitnah kami terhadap Ketua Menteri Lim Guan Eng berhubung Tanda Putera..."
Hill: And the apology must cover the whole page.
Spinnot: Even if the apology is published in the front page, I am of the opinion that it is not sincere and is made only to avoid a defamation suit.
If someone is genuinely sorry what he has done, such as slandering other people, he would not repeat the same again. But Utusan does it too often.
Sirach: By apologising and having the apology accepted, Utusan has escaped with no cost for its mischievous conduct.
It is good that Karpal (the counsel for the two Lims) has reportedly said that this is the last time that an apology would be accepted. This "newspaper" has gone over the edge too many times.
Swipenter: Utusan is just playing a game - smear, apologise and smear again. Their apologies are not sincere at all.
We know that this is the only paper that can afford to employ this kind of strategy to demonise the non-Malays, dissenting Malays and all those oppose to Umno's corrupt rule and mismanagement of the country.
Kamikasi: Utusan has achieved its intention to sway the Felda and many Malay voters during the GE election. Don't be fooled by Utusan because behind the scene they would be making fun of DAP.
They can never change the spot. Sue them and get some of the money reserved for Utusan to spin lies.
Lim Chong Leong: I don't understand why DAP or LGE, LKS (Lim Kit Siang) or Karpal would want to accept Utusan's apology, when in the same edition as the apology, Utusan will come up with even more libelous venom against them.
Tan Kim Keong: Please ensure that the apology includes the following: (1) that they are sorry due to the implication of lies propagated by them and (2) they make an oath not to do what they have been doing.
Anonymous #41463424: Make Utusan publish the apology for 30 days.
Anwar issues 're-delineation' warning from New York
Puttu Samai: Based on electoral roll of GE13, technically BN only needs 16.6 percent popular vote to win 112 seats (simple majority in Parliament).
These smallest 112 seats only have 4.4 million electors. BN only needs slightly more than half of those - say, 2.23 million votes out of the total of 13.3 million - to win these seats.
BN ‘won' 47 percent popular votes in GE 13. With a bare minimum of 16.6 percent, there's still plenty of room for BN to engineer another magical win in GE14.
BN will have no qualms taking power even with 30% popular votes. The compulsion to cheat in order to stay in power will be even more intense. Pakatan Rakyat better be more vigilant.
Ablastine: Make no mistake. The next GE is fully dependent on the fairness of the delineation exercise. It is to be fought now and not five years later.
BN will definitely fall if the delineation is fair so they will use every means at their disposal to make it even more lopsided. They cannot exist without gerrymandering.
The opposition must exercise the most important power at its disposal - people's power. History has shown that no corrupted regime can put down a people on fire.
Doc: What's with those glasses, Anwar Ibrahim? Have you become a model for Christian Dior eyewear? What a weird pair of glasses to wear even for an eye infection.
