Kedah Umno has proposed that candidates contesting in the upcoming party elections be allowed to meet delegates themselves.
Its chairperson Mukhriz Mahathir said Kedah Umno had received many complaints from its candidates on the party's code of ethics on this which they claimed was quite stifling and prevented them from introducing themselves to the delegates.
"I understand it is to avoid unethical practices, but at the same time, I feel it is important for candidates to be given the opportunity to meet the delegates and introduce themselves," he told reporters after opening a community programme in Jerlun today.
He said not all candidates enjoyed or benefitted from wide media coverage and many were still unknown to the delegates, thus the need for loosening the rules.
The code disallows candidates from campaigning on their own and are only allowed to campaign and introduce themselves through programmes organised by Umno headquarters with the cooperation of the state Umno liaison committees.
