Malaysia is in the Indonesian media spotlight after the latter's presidential hopeful Prabowo Subianto lent his star power to a murder trial of the republic's citizen in Kelantan.

According to English daily The Star , Probowo was present at the hearing of Wilfrida Soik's hearing at the Kota Bharu High Court today in what he described as a mission to save the maid.

NONE Wilfrida ( left ) is also being represented by famed Malaysian lawyer Shafee Abdullah.

She is accused of murdering her employer Yeap Sook Pen in Pasir Mas, Kelantan in 2010.

However, the trial is gearing up to be a controversial one as she was alleged to have been underage at that time and was supposedly abducted by human traffickers to be turned into a maid.

High Court Judge Ahmad Zaidi was quoted as saying that the court would be blind to race, religion and creed and had ordered an age test and psychiatric evaluation of the accused.

Prabowo is a member of the Great Indonesia Movement Party and is among the front runners for in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election.

He is the son-in-law of former Indonesian president Suharto who led the republic for 31 years.

Prabowo had defended Suharto during the 1998 Indonesian uprising and was later discharged from the military after a regime change for alleged kidnapping of government opponents.

The attention surrounding the case that carries a potential death sentence has picked up in Indonesia, with several of the republic's MPs calling for Wilfrida's freedom.

Malaysia and Indonesia has had a rocky relationship in past years involving territorial disputes, cultural disagreements and abuse of Indonesian maids in Malaysia.

These incidences had prompted fierce reaction from Indonesia and Wilfrida's latest trial is similarly an issue that could possibly affect the diplomatic ties between both countries.
