PARLIAMENT The government cannot stop people from obtaining fake university degrees, and can only act against individuals if they use such documents to support applications for jobs in the public service.

"But if they want to frame it and keep it as a memento,  then it's fine. It’s like buying a fake Louis Vuitton bag made in China," said Shahidan Kassim, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

“There are so many different duplicates of the same bag. There are so many levels of this duplication,” he stressed.

He was replying to Ong Kian Ming (DAP-Serdang) during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

However, Shahidan did not reveal if the government would take any action against Human Resources Minister Richard Riot and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Ewon Ebin, who Ong has alleged to be holding fake degrees.

Without touching on the issue of the two ministers, Shahidan merely said that the government would take action if any public servant is found to have faked their qualifications.

“We will sack anyone found to have done so,” Shahidan said.

Both Riot and Ebin have denied Ong’s allegations.
