The sidewalk roof at Xiri Supermarket in Batu 24 Jalan Kuala Berang in Kuala Berang, Terengganu collapsed yesterday evening after being hit by a heavy downpour and strong winds.

The 5.20pm incident also brought down the supermarket’s main signboard.

However, no casualties were reported, said the officer-in-charge of Kuala Berang fire station, Mohd Zazuli Badru.

“Based on our initial investigation, the sidewalk roof of the supermarket, which comprised a 65-metre long metal structure, had collapsed due to strong wind and heavy rain,” he told reporters in Kuala Berang.

According to a supermarket worker, Yusof Che Ali, 57, there were about 100 people, including staff and customers, in the premises when the incident occurred.

“It was raining cats and dogs when I heard a sound like something collapsed. I rushed outside and saw the sidewalk roof was on the ground,” he said.
