Indonesia's Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) arrested the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Akil Mochtar, in Jakarta last night for allegedly receiving a bribe over a general election dispute for the post of Gunung Mas district officer in Central Kalimantan.

The arrest has dealt a heavy blow to the Indonesian judiciary as the Constitutional Court has had the reputation of being the cleanest institution in the republic.

Also arrested together with Akil at the latter's residence at about 10pm last night were a member of the republic’s People’s Representative Council (DPR) and a businessman, where the KPK officers also seized Singapore dollars worth between Rp2 billion and Rp3 billion.

Two more suspects were then arrested by KPK officers at a hotel in Central Jakarta.

The arrests were confirmed by KPK spokesperson Johan Budi at a press conference held at the KPK building late last night.

Following the arrests, a Constitutional Court judge, Hamdan Zoelva, told reporters, also late last night, that all the judges of the court would strive to restore the integrity and credibility of this court.
