Saying that they do not have confidence in Liow Tiong Lai, six MCA divisions in Penang have thrown their support behind the embattled Dr Chua Soi Lek to remain the party president.

The heads of the Tanjong, Bukit Gelugor, Bukit Bendera, Balik Pulau, Jelutong and Bayan Baru divisions indicated their decision at a press conference today.

NONELiow, the deputy president, is set to challenge for the top post at the upcoming party polls.

However, he must face an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Oct 20 for publicly describing Chua as "immoral" and blaming him for the party's dismal showing in the 12th and 13th general election respectively.

Penang MCA deputy chief Dr Loh Hock Hun (left) - also the Tanjong chief - urged all newly-elected central delegates to attend the EGM to decide on the major issues facing the party.

"We urge all party members to ... contribute whatever we can to move the party forward to a better future," he said.

The six division chief present at the press conference today were Loh (Tanjong), Koay Kar Huah (Bukit Gelugor), Tang Heap Seng (Bukit Bendera), Ooi Siew Kim (Bayan Baru), Chuah Chin Chuon (Jelutong) and Chuah Tee Sung (Balik Pulau).

NONEOn why the group rejected Liow, Loh said he was “not suitable to lead the party”.

“He also does not have a proven track record. We need a leader with a proven track record,” he added, followed by applause from party members at the conference.
