PAS vice-president Husam Musa's decision to break ranks and direct pointed questions at the PAS-led Kelantan government over its policies is a positive move, says academician Mohammad Agus Yusoff.

NONEAgus (right), a Kelantanese who is a political science lecturer with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), said there was nothing wrong in Husam trying to correct weaknesses in the state government.

He said this when asked to respond to news reports that Husam, who is the Salor assemblyperson, questioned the state government on the "suspicious award" of a logging concession and the state government plans in raising water tariffs.

"I have been waiting for such a debate for a long time where a party member questions his or her own party's policies or government decisions.

"For me, the action taken by the Salor assemblyperson (Husam) is directed to correct the weaknesses of his party, since he is just a normal elected representative and no longer a state executive councillor.

"It is different if he is an exco member, as he would be bound by the principles of collective responsibility," Agus said.

He said that if backbenchers in the Dewan Rakyat were to behave the same, it would lead to a healthy political environment that would benefit the people.

On Tuesday, Husam had demanded an explanation from the Kelantan government on its decision to award a logging concession at the Ulu Sat and Cabang Tongkat forest reserve in Machang, based on a two-page application.

Husam was a state exco member under the Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat administration.
