A senior police officer with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) claimed trial to two charges at the magistrate’s court in George Town today, including one of intentionally allowing a detainee to escape custody.  

L Chand Kumari, 56, is accused of letting K Prabaharan, 45, who is an accused in a cheating case, escape at 1.50pm from the George Town Court Complex on Oct 9 and of lodging a false report on the matter at the North East police station later the same day.             

Chand Kumari, who has been in the police force for more than 20 years, was charged under Sections 225A (1) (a) and 182 of the Penal Code and faces between six months and three years of imprisonment, fine or both, upon conviction.  

She was represented by counsels RSN Rayer and V Parthipan, who earlier applied for a ban on media coverage of the trial to protect the interests of their client and her family in view of her senior position.   

However, magistrate Diannee Ningrad Nor Azahar denied the request and set bail at RM7,000 with one surety.    

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Faisal Md Noor conducted the prosecution and remention was scheduled for Nov 25.
