Khairul Azwan Harun won the Umno Youth vice-chief post after re-elections were held in two divisions today, according to unofficial results.

Umno elections committee deputy chairperson Azmi Khalid said Khairul Azwan got the votes of the Gelang Patah and Sabak Bernam divisions in today’s re-elections.

A re-election was also to be held in the Bachok division today but it has been postponed to Friday.

“By winning in two of the three divisions ordered to hold re-elections, he can be deemed to be the winner of the (vice- chief) post. However, this is an unofficial result. The official result will be announced by Umno headquarters,” he told Bernama.

In Umno Youth’s elections on Oct 12, the contest for the Youth vice-chief post saw frontrunners Khairul Azwan and Jamawi Jaafar ending up in a 73-73 tie.

Umno’s elections committee then ordered re-elections be held in the three divisions after considering all factors besides having the agreement of the duo that it was the best option to break the tie.

Azmi added that in view of today’s results, the re-election in Bachok had become academic.

Khairul Azwan won Gelang Patah and Sabak Bernam with 96 and 161 votes respectively, while Jamawi managed 61 and 69 votes.

The other two candidates in the fray did not fare well.

The 2013 Umno polls uses the electoral college system whereby the winner of each division picks up one vote. Umno has 191 divisions.
