DAP has promised to throw its weight behind a BN-move to raised democracy standards in Malaysia by letting the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) air its hearings 'live' on television.

NONEDAP MP Tony Pua (left) said Parliament should expedite the move since former youth and sports minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek wished to testify "live" over alleged discrepancies pertaining to expenditure for a RM1.6 million K-Pop concert during the National Youth Day 2012, and as PAC chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed also liked the idea.

Currently, the only block in the way of the anticipated live teklecast of the PAC hearing was a Parliamentary Standing Order, which prohibits live hearings under Rule 85.

Parliament has two weeks to change this rule, as Ahmad Shabery is slated to testify to PAC on Nov 14.

"There can be no better way to strengthen the role of the PAC than to allow testimonies of ministers, subject matter experts and top civil servants to be telecast live to the public," the DAP national publicity secretary said in a statement.

Pua added that since the bi-partisan PAC committee had already agreed to this move, then Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should also have no objection.

"We look forward to a speedy response from the (Parliamentary) Speaker and the Standing Orders Committee, as well as a bipartisan effort from both BN and PKR to allow the Malaysian Parliament to take a very important baby step towards becoming the best democracy in the world," Pua said.
