In a press release today, MCA deputy publicity chief Loh Seng Kok said the federal government was already heading in this direction, but needs to be spurred further.
"This form of needs-based policies aims to unite and strengthen the bond between all ethnic communities to create a government of the people, thereby embodying a true 1Malaysia," he said.
Loh also expressed support for a proposal by former deputy education minister Saifuddin Abdullah for a relaunch of the Najib-administration's New Economic Model (NEM).
Saifuddin told a recent forum that the NEM was overshadowed by the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment (BEE) programme and it was thus timely to have a relaunch of the NEM, which is an inclusive agenda.
Loh said that although BN is a coalition of race-based parties, a responsible government must emphasise equitable treatment and justice in order to enhace race relations.
"Results from the past two general elections clearly reveal that all Malaysians want to build a more equitable, diverse government. Malaysian politics must be geared towards 'needs-based' irrespective of race.
"MCA has kept to our goal of being a 'race-based party but multiracial in outreach' since our party's founding 64 years ago. Implementation of the party’s various programmes are catered to benefit multiracial Malaysians as well as to uphold BN’s spirit of 'unity in diversity'," he said.
