A guard, entrusted with the security of his employer's jewellery outlet, instead robbed the shop at the KL Festival shopping complex in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur CID deputy director, ACP Khairy Ahrasa said in the incident at 9am, the suspect who was in full uniform, threatened four workers of the shop with a firearm, before running off with a tray containing 100 gold chains.

He said the incident which took about five minutes happened when the workers were arranging the jewellery.

“Police are investigating to determine if the guard escaped on a motorcycle or had an accomplice waiting outside the shopping complex. We will study the closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) recording first,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Khairy said police were now conducting a major hunt for the 26-year-old suspect who was believed to be from Sabah.

He said the initial investigation found the suspect to have started work as a security guard at the shop last month and police were checking if he had a criminal record.

Khairy said police were also checking the suspect’s record as a security guard and to determine if he was a Malaysian or a foreign national.

Meanwhile, a check by Bernama at the scene found the jewellery shop closed yesterday and several workers were being interviewed by the police who also examined the recordings of the CCTV.

On Oct 23, a security guard shot dead a bank officer in Subang Jaya before escaping with RM450,000.

The suspect in that case, who had an identity card believed to be fake, is still being hunted by police.
