Indonesia has deported the son of an alleged terrorist mastermind to Singapore, the city-state’s Ministry of Home Affairs said yesterday, adding that authorities are investigating whether Masyhadi Mas Selamat “has been involved in activities that are inimical to the security of Singapore”.

The 24-year-old, a Singaporean, was deported from Indonesia on Oct 30, it said.

He had been arrested 10 days earlier at his own wedding reception in Solo, in central Java, according to news reports.

His father, Mas Selamat Kastari - a Singaporean of Indonesian descent - is believed to have led the Singapore branch of the Islamist terror group Jemaah Islamiah.

He was arrested in Indonesia in 2006 and deported to Singapore after allegedly plotting to hijack a plane and crash it into Singapore’s Changi Airport.

In 2008, he escaped from detention and spent more than a year on the run before being recaptured in neighbouring Malaysia.

He is currently being held under Singapore’s Internal Security Act, which allows suspects to be held indefinitely without trial.
