PAS today confirmed that it will be a five-way contest for its three vice-presidents at the upcoming party elections on Nov 21.

In the race are Kelantan exco members information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and central working committee member Abu Bakar Chik, both of whom are from the ulama group.

NONEThey take on the three incumbents who are seeking re-election: Kubang Kerian MP Salahuddin Ayub, Husam Musa and Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar - all considered professionals

Party election committee chairperson and PAS central election committee chairperson Asmuni Awi (left) revealed the final candidates list at a press conference this morning, after nominations closed last night.

He also confirmed speculations of a three-cornered fight for the Youth chief post.

Contesting are Federal Territories Youth chief Kamaruzzaman Mohamad, former Johor Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat and newcomer Zulhazmi Zakaria.

Asmuni also announced that party president Abdul Hadi Awang has retained his post uncontested.

Also confirmed as reported by Malaysiakini yesterday is a straight fight for party deputy president between incumbent Mohamad Sabu and Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, setting the stage for a professional versus ulama battle.

'Strictly no badmouthing'

For the Muslimat wing, the top three posts see two candidates each.

Siti Mariah Mahmud will face Najihatussalehah Ahmad for the wing's deputy while Mumtaz Mat Nawi and Rosni Adam vie for the VP post.

Meanwhile, Asmuni also warned the party that he has received complaints of several cases where state-level committees have been organising events that turn out to be promoting certain candidates while putting down others.

He said candidates caught being involved will be dropped from the contest.

"We will not compromise if there are such events organised aimed at promoting oneself, or trying to bring down someone else," he said.
