Himpinan Hijau leader Wong Tack failed to meet Japanese ambassador Shigeru Nakamura at the embassy today over reports that three Japanese companies are allegedly providing financial support to the controversial Lynas Advanced Material Plant (Lamp).

NONE Speaking to journalists later, Wong ( left ) expressed his disappointment that no one was at the embassy as the mission is closed today.

He claimed that the anti-Lynas group had contacted the embassy several times before making the visit this afternoon.

 

“We had given them more than two weeks to give us a time of convenience and they had failed to do so.

“So we chose this time that's convenient to our people to be here, and yet they didn’t display any responsible diplomacy to come to meet the people. That is not acceptable for an embassy,” he said.

Himpunan Hijau has given the Japanese ambassador seven days to respond to the demands of the environment movement, failing which, Wong said, the group would mount a “serious confrontation”.

When asked about the said “confrontation”, Wong refused to divulge further details.

Cancel loans, Japan told

Wong claims that Japan has allowed three companies to support Lynas with loans totalling US$325 million.

NONE In exchange, he said, Lynas would provide 30 percent of Japan’s rare earths needs for the next ten years.

As such, Wong is urging the Japanese government to demand the companies involved to stop providing financial support to Lynas.

“We want to call for an immediate revocation of the temporary operating license (of Lamp) and call for Japan to immediately withdraw the financial support and void that agreement that has been signed with Lynas. That will close Lynas (down),” he added.

Wong was accompanied by fifty Himpunan Hijau supporters in his visit today.

They waved their banner ‘1 million Malaysians petitioned to shut down Lynas’ and chanted “Japan stop supporting Lynas” and “Lynas share goes down” in front of the compound despite the rain.

 

Around ten police personnel were spotted but they did not interrupt the whole affair.
