Gerakan's Wanita wing will be organising a 'I am Free from Corruption' run nationwide next year, to step up its campaign against corruption initiatives.

NONEIts chief Tan Lian Hoe said the run, which will be launched in January 2014, was one of the wing's efforts to create awareness among the public about the importance of fighting corruption, together with the authorities.

"During the party's general assembly earlier, I had personally spoken to the delegates on how important it is for everyone to fight corruption. In fact, I have been speaking about it during my days as a normal member of parliament since 2004.

"With this initiative, it is our hope that the federal government will take this issue more seriously and the public will start to efforts, together with authorities, to bust the serious crime," she told a press conference at Menara PGRM today.

An indirect message to gov't?

Tan, who has been re-elected as Wanita chief for the third term said the wing will convey an official invitation to Prime Minister Najib Razak to officiate the event, which is set for Jan 11, 2014.

She also expressed hope that every party, including corporate entities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals would show their support for the initiative.

When asked whether this was an indirect political message from Gerakan which is a Barisan Nasional component party, to the ruling government, Tan said:

"We think under the PM's leadership... he is trying his best to strengthen (initiatives to combat corruption). There have been many cases where corrupted ones have been brought to the court. This shows that the BN government does not only listen to the people but walks the talk.

"We are trying to create awareness and to enlighten the public that it is also their responsibility to stop corruption. It will be a continuous call from us to the people," she said.
