PAS cannot implement hudud or Islamic criminal law because the federal constitution does not provide power to any states to mete out their own punishment for criminals, said Member of Parliament for Gua Musang Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

He said punishment for criminals comes under the federal government's jurisdiction and PAS should take into account existing laws before making any decision.

NONE"As a Muslim I support the implementation of hudud. Ironically, under the federal constitution, all states have no power in matters relating to crime," he told reporters at Parliament House today.

Commenting on Tengku Razaleigh's remarks, PAS vice-president Mahfuz Omar said, "I think Ketereh MP Annuar Musa has given his support. He will lead efforts to overcome the legal obstacles."

Annuar recently expressed his support for hudud in a Facebook posting and asked other parties, especially the DAP, not to prevent PAS from pursuing the campaign as it did not have any seat in Kelantan.

MP for Kubang Kerian Ahmad Baihaki Atiqullah said hudud could only be implemented Kelantan if the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 was amended, and Kelantan and national PAS would discuss about it soon.
