The motion on hudud that is to be debated at the PAS muktamar this weekend is not about pressuring Pakatan Rakyat states to adopt hudud, PAS has clarified.

Instead, its information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said, the motion is to pressure the federal government to implement syariah law and to assist any state that wants to do so.

NONE Tuan Ibrahim said this was because "it is known that the one barrier to the implementation of Islamic law is the federal government, which is spearheaded by Umno".

However, he reiterated that PAS-led Kelantan was not alone in its intention to implement hudud.

"We have to understand that it is an obligation for all Muslims, and their leaders.

"As such, there have been several motions proposed for debate to pressure the federal government not to block any state wanting to implement this Islamic law to handle corruption, usury, abuse of power, crime and economic injustice, whether the state is under BN or Pakatan."

Tuan Ibrahim, who is also chairperson for the 59th muktamar, was commenting on a report by Sinar Harian stating that a motion to push Pakatan states to adopt the hudud would debated this weekend.

The long-standing debate was revived when Umno's Ketereh MP Annuar Musa declared his support for Kelantan to implement the Islamic criminal law, which was enacted in the east coast state in 1993.

Although the enactment exists, it has not been enforced as doing so will first require an amendment to the federal constitution.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Parliamentary Affairs, Shahidan Kassim, has said he is open to bringing a motion to debate the matter in the Dewan Rakyat.
