Two football fans were detained yesterday for seeking a change of leadership at the Football Association Malaysia (FAM), following Malaysia's 1-0 defeat against Qatar at Shah Alam Stadium last night.

The duo were, however, released at about 3am.

Shah Alam police have confirmed the detentions but declined to elaborate further.

It is believed that the duo were nabbed while entering the VIP section of the Shah Alam stadium to express their dissatisfaction over the match and demand FAM president Sultan Ahmad Shah's ( above ) resignation.

The national team's poor performance last night angered fans who broke into a song demanding the resignation of the Pahang sultan from FAM, as well as national coach K Rajagopal.

Things got heated when a flare was lit at the M seating section of the stadium, after Malaysia was booted out from the Asia Cup 2015 qualifying round.

This prompted anti-riot police to enter the pitch and disperse fans who had gathered to sing protest songs lampooning the national team.

NONE Malaysians also took to social media to vent frustration over the dismal performance of Harimau Malaya, who now rank 160 in the International Football Association (FIFA).

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin ( right ), who has recently been very vocal against FAM, also chipped in on Twitter, snidely saying: “The fans voices are quite clear. I don't need to add to it.”

In 1996, FAM had aimed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, which is to take place in Brazil.

'Group went up to VIP section'

One of the arrested, Alfadli Awaludin, said he and a group of fans went up to the VIP section on the second floor of the stadium to air their grievances.

However, they failed to meet any officers from FAM, before being chased away by police officers.

Alfadli said one of his friends was beaten and nabbed by the police and he went to confront them, before being taken into custody himself.

“I went to the VIP section to meet the FAM president. He should have been at the stadium for this important match. If he wasn’t there then I wanted to meet any FAM official, but I could not find them,” he told Malaysiakini .

Alfadli, or also known as Rambo, said he will continue to fight and pressure the highest footballing body in the country to accept changes for the good of the country.

“We don’t want to blame the players or coaches for the losses. (Datuk) K Raja(gopal) is the 21st national coach. There is only one individual who has been around for all these,” he said.

In November 2012 Alfadli and a group of fans from Facebook page ‘Presiden FAM sila letak jawatan’ (FAM president, please resign) sent a memorandum demanding the same thing to the FAM office in Kelana Jaya.
