Thousands of vehicles were caught in a massive traffic jam lasting more than four hours on the Penang Bridge this morning when a lorry carrying gas cylinders overturned.

A Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd (PBSB) spokesperson said the lorry which overturned at Km1.3 on the Penang Bridge from the island heading to the mainland resulted in three of the four lanes being obstructed.

“Only one lane heading to Perai was open and this led to a massive jam on all lanes heading to the bridge from Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, Gelugor and Bayan Lepas,” the spokesperson said when contacted in Butterworth today.

He said the lorry carrying gas cylinders that overturned at 10.30am was removed completely at 2pm, after which the jam began to ease.
