S'GOR ASSEMBLY Selangor opposition leader Mohd Shamsudin Lias has been ejected from the state assembly today after spending about eight minutes arguing with deputy speaker Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

NONE He was attempting to defend Kota Damansara assemblyperson Halimaton Saadiah Bohan at the time, who was told to retract a statement she had just made or be referred to the rights and privileges committee.

However, Shamsudin ( left) , the Barisan Nasional Sungai Burong representative, repeatedly turned a deaf ear to Nik Nazmi's sit down order.

"Read the standing orders! If you are unhappy with the speaker's decision, you can put forward a motion.

"There are means to do it. There are procedures, not opposing the speaker's orders" Nik Nazmi said when ticking off Shamsudin.

He also expressed reluctance to expel any representative, but Shamsudin continued to speak, ignoring his switched off microphone.

As the verbal fracas dragged on, other restless members of the house began to lose patience.

"Speaker, just use the standing orders and expel this stubborn opposition leader. Even when you tell him to sit he refuses. It is not difficult, S-I-T. Sit!" interjected Sri Muda assemblyperson Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei.

At this point, Teratai assemblyperson Tiew Way Keng read out Standing Order 44(2), empowering the speaker to expel members of the house who "behave indecently, insult the assembly, or ignore the speaker's powers".

"Since earlier, I have given you a good chance by which standing order are you using (to defend Halimaton). I asked you to refer (to the standing orders).

"I have given you many opportunities. With this I order the Sungai Burong representative to leave," Nik Nazmi said.

NONE At a press conference later, Nik Nazmi said as he had  not specified Shamsudin's expulsion period, the shortest time span of one day is imposed by default.

Earlier Halimaton was questioning the jump in rental for public housing flats in Kota Damansara, which she claimed had "started as early as June 2013."

State exco member Elizabeth Wong then interjected to cite Standing Order 36(6) that her statement was made in bad faith because the same issue has been raised before and had been already explained that the decision was made in 2007 when the state was under BN rule.

It was at this point when Nik Nazmi told Halimaton to retract her statement and Shamsudin rose to her defence .
