An international panel of experts will put Lynas' Advanced Material Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng, Kuantan under the microscope at a seminar tomorrow.

In a statement today, NGO Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) the organiser of the seminar, said it is aimed at providing an insight into the possible "hazards" of the facility.

Among them are Gerhard Schmidt, a radioactive waste expert from the Oeko Institute in Germany and Peter Karamboskos, a radiologist from the Radiation Health Committee of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA).

Also on the panel are Wang Guo Zheng of China who has done extensive research on rare earth waste management and environmental and social impact analyst Yoshihiko Wada of Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan.

The seminar at the Mandarin Court Hotel tomorrow is open to the public.

The controversial RM700 million plant has faced fierce public protest over concerns of its waste's radioactive material.

However, the government granted the plant permission to operate in February last year after more than a year of delay caused by  public pressure.

SMSL had since resorted to more radical measures, including attempts to blockade the factory's rare earth supply.

Another environmental group Himpunan Hijau had also collected over a million signatures urging the government to close down the factory.
