Will Bersih shine when Ambiga fades?

voxpop, vox Fair Play: Malaysiakini's headline ‘Will Bersih shine when Ambiga fades' did not do justice to Ambiga Sreenevasan. She has been elevated as an iconic leader fighting for justice, fairness and equality for all Malaysians.

Instead of fading, her star will keep shining for posterity in a better Malaysia and will be remembered in the nation's annals.

Opah: Although it is difficult to imagine, I am sure Ambiga will go on to bigger and better things. A ‘superstar' like her will not fade away, especially when there is still so much work left to be done.

HC: For the selfless sacrifices you had made, for the threats against your life and those of your family, for the indignity of being called a 'pendatang' and other racially derogatory names, for your leadership and inspiration.

For your determination to see a better Malaysia. For your courage. Ambiga, you will be missed.

Ksn: Ambiga, you played a great role in the awakening of our people's consciousness towards the indispensability for a real democracy for Malaysia like the need for independent, competent public institutions such as the EC, the Attorney-General's Chambers, the judiciary, etc, which is now absent.

The flame has been lit, and it will grow bigger and bigger until the aim is achieved. There is no retreat from that. You did the country proud, madam.

We think there are still a lot of things to be corrected with this ruling regime gaining through cheating. I hope you could be of great help to the incoming Bersih committee to ‘ubah' (change) the nation.

Doc: People are itching for a Bersih 4.0. They are fed up with this corrupt and wasteful Umno government and their minions at the Election Commission (EC) for doing everything possible (mostly illegal) to keep Umno in power.

CQ MUAR: As indicated by Ambiga, Bersih is non-partisan and being a civil society movement, its principles and cause will continue to thrive and bind people together.

Hence, we're confident that the new leadership will raise Bersih to even greater heights. As such, we trust Ambiga will, and shall, continue to guide Bersih in the near future.

Perhaps it would be well that the incoming leaders could harvest from Ambiga's past experience, leadership and contributions as mentor in the event consultation and advice are needed.

However, with Ambiga's expression of confidence in Maria Chin Abdullah, we're certain beyond doubt of Chin's competence and abilities to lead Bersih on.

Therefore, let us whole-heartedly rally and remain united, and render all our support to Chin and her team of office-bearers. United we stand, all for a free and just society.

'Malaysians win top Taiwan film awards, no thanks to PM'

Louis: PM Najib Abdul Razak as usual is so shameless when it comes to claiming credit where credit isn't due by congratulating Tsai Ming Liang and Yeo Yann Yan for clinging the Best Director and Best Supporting Actress awards in the prestigious Chinese movie awards ceremony last Saturday.

Tell me how many people on earth dare ask whether the crowd is ready for BN despite getting negative replies three times?

He was not ashamed to do that. As such it is not surprising that he wanted to claim some credit for the success of the film which he did not at all encourage financially nor morally.

Awakened: I watched the 50th Golden Horse Award last Saturday. It was a very competitive awards with nominations from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

This year best film award goes to a Singaporean film with the title ‘Father and Mother Not at Home'. The Chinese film industry has indeed grown leap and bounds in the last two decades with China and Hong Kong leading the pack.

Singapore is fast catching up although it is a small country with a population of only 4.5 million. Most of Chinese Malaysian talents such as Michelle Yeoh, Li Sin Jie, Namewee and others have to go to greener pastures in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore to develop their careers.

The movie industry can be a great income earner if properly developed. Malaysia's multiracial background and history can be a great place for the local Chinese movie industry to thrive if there is some support from the government.

Joker: Just as capable Malaysians continue to shine overseas via the brain-drain policy, dregs like ‘Tanda Putera' director Shuhaimi Baba remain in the country to claim whatever glory that can be had as jaguh kampung.

Even P Ramlee, the best talent Malaysia produced thus far in the film industry, achieved his greatest heights of success in Singapore.

Ontoi: Dear Joker, P Ramlee was of Indonesian origin. He died poor. Malaysia only started claiming and glorifying his films after his death. Even his children remained poor.

FairGame: Beware of he who talks with a forked tongue. In future, if the movie 'The New Village' managed to win some international awards or recognition, Najib will jump on the bandwagon and claim credit, too.

Stried: We have all got to get use to this - Najib is very fast to congratulate you on his tweets, but if there is any problem he will be absolutely quiet.

Clearwater: A new word can be coined from this episode. Naajeeb: A person who is never there for you when needed, but appears uninvited to share your spotlight at the moment of triumph.
