Gerakan Youth says Pakatan Rakyat has broken its election manifesto promise of free education with its recent move to raise the pay of the Selangor state lawmakers.

Its chief Tan Keng Liang said today he submitted a memorandum demanding the Selangor government makes education at the state-run Universiti Selangor (Unisel) free.

NONE This was after noting that the state failed to allocate any funds for this purpose in its 2014 budget.

"The Selangor government should fulfil its GE13 pledges, since it can afford to hike the salaries of the top state leaders with a 373 percent hike," Tan said.

He said he went to the Selangor menteri besar's office in Shah Alam to submit the memorandum, but failed to meet the top state leaders, including Menteri Bear Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

The memorandum, addressed to Khalid, was then handed over to the confidential secretary of Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, who is also Seri Kembangan assemblyperson.

In the memorandum, Tan noted that Unisel was fully-state funded and that Khalid was one of its directors.

Established in 1999, Unisel now operates two campuses - in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor, and Shah Alam and it can accommodate more than 12,000 students.

Asked how much money the Selangor government would need to stump up to make Unisel free for all students, Tan said he was not sure of this. He also did not know whether this was promised in the Pakatan's election manifesto for Selangor.

However, Tan added, Pakatan had differentiated itself from the BN election manifesto by campaigning for "free education" during the 13th general election.
