The Selangor state government will send emergency relief aid to the flood victims of Kuantan, most of which has come under water after four days of continuous torrential rain.

One of the first states to respond to the need of the poorer east coast state, the Pakatan Rakyat-run Selangor executive council has tasked executive councillor Rodziah Ismail to coordinate the provision of the aid.

NONE "Selangor has approved RM50,000 to aid the flood situation in Pahang," Rodziah ( right ) tweeted. The sum will go towards sending emergency goods and other relief work.

Further aid may also be given to Johor and Terengganu, which are also facing a flood situation, she added.

“This is the Selangor state government’s humanitarian effort to help our fellow Malaysians in emergency situations. Earlier, we had also donated to the victims of the Cameron Highlands flood,” another Selangor exco member, Elizabeth Wong, texted to Malaysiakini , when asked what prompted the action.

Selangor's move signals that the state is taking serious PKR Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh's pleas for help in Parliament today.

Fuziah stood up in the House and urged the government to declare a state of emergency over the drastic flood situation.

However, she was chided by BN MP Bung Mokhtar Radin who called her to "balik kawasan" (return to her constituency) instead and give help.

Minister in Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim later stood up and explained that all emergency forces have been deployed to Kuantan and were on their way to the Pahang capital to help alleviate the situation.

Reports from the state say that water and electricity supply have been cut off in most areas of Kuantan, while roads in and around the town have been inundated by up to one metre of water.

A spokesperson at the flood operations centre of the Pahang police headquarters said as of 11am today, a total of 11,721 flood victims were being sheltered in flood relief centres in Kuantan, Rompin, Pekan, Maran and Jerantut.
