Flood victims at evacuation centres were told not to worry about the safety of their homes as police are monitoring the flood-hit areas.

Johor police chief Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said a directive had been issued to all district police chiefs in the state to monitor homes affected by the floods and to patrol residential areas regularly.

“Police have also set up mobile police stations at flood relief centres to facilitate flood victims to make any reports or complaints,” he told reporters at the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters in Johor Baru today.

He said the public should cooperate with the authorities and security agencies and think of their personal safety by evacuating to safer areas quickly without being overly concerned about the safety of their property and possessions.

He said the people were also reminded not to treat the floods as a ‘water festival’ and to constantly monitor the movement of children to prevent any mishaps.

According to Mohd Mokhtar, a total of 8,746 victims involving 2,381 families have been placed in 68 evacuation centres in six districts in the state as of this morning.
