Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has dismissed talk of a possible dialogue between party president Najib Abdul Razak and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

"I think it will be a waste of time for Najib to meet Anwar, as there are many things the PM can do," she told reporters on the sidelines of the Umno general assembly.

She was quizzed by reporters on Anwar's offer for a dialogue after Najib, in his presidential address,  extended an olive branch to other political parties on the possibility of talks.

"Even though we are slandered, taunted, this party has never got tired of extending an unity handshake with any political party in order to see Muslims unite once again," the Umno president had said.

Today, Anwar in a statement welcomed the offer from Najib, saying Pakatan Rakyat leaders are open for a dialogue.

Do not underestimate the mak cik

Shahrizat was also asked about the strength of Wanita in countering the threat posed by the opposition, which has been accused of using the social media.

"Do not underestimate the mak cik in Wanita Umno, as we are more powerful then DAP’s Red Bean (cyber) army. We have the power of persuasion and are always going to the ground to help the people," she said.

However, Shahrizat admitted the social media as an important tool and said the Wanita wing and the party would work towards utilising the medium wider.

Yesterday, Najib in his speech emphasised the need for Umno to utilise the new media, including Facebook and Twitter .
