Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the state government welcomes Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) intention to investigate recent claims of sand theft in Sungai Long, Hulu Langat.

"The state government hopes for a professional investigation by MACC and guarantees that it will not provide protection to any party involved, be it in Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd (KSSB) or the land district office," Abdul Khalid said in a statement released by his office yesterday.

KSSB is a state government-linked company which manages sand mining in the state.

Abdul Khalid said the state government was also obtaining reports concerning the matter for its own investigation and will not hesitate to punish those individuals found to have engaged in corrupt practices.

He added that KSSB had also been instructed to implement the Integrity Pact in cooperation with Transparency International to improve efficiency and curb corruption.

Water supply

In a separate matter the Menteri Besar's office said it has asked that Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB) to ensure that the Matang Pagar reservoir which supplies water to Klang Valley has at least six metres of water before it is shut down.

This is in light of a partial stop-work at the Sungai Selangor Phase 2 water treatment plant for maintenance which will begin on Dec 17 at 8am, affecting some one million people in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

The Sungai Selangor Phase 2 water treatment plant supplies 950 million litres of water to the Bukit Mayong and Matang Pagar balancing reservoir but the maintenance work will only affect the latter.

Abdul Khalid said sufficient water levels must be ensured so that resumption of the water supply will be swift.

He added that other water treatment plants will also be used to help alleviate the water disruption in the affected areas but they may face low water pressures.
