MCA presidential candidates Ong Tee Keat and Liow Tiong Lai have agreed to a debate, as suggested by fellow candidate Gan Ping Sieu.

 

NONE During separate press conferences, Ong and Liow both agreed to the debate on current issues involving the party.

 

However, Liow has some conditions for the debate.

 

"We can debate any time but we have to look at the issue, context, purpose of the debate. It's most important that we see this party election.  

 

"Most important we have to ensure that the central delegate understand the views, mission and vision of all the leaders," he said.

 

Liow said it was more important for candidates to prove what they can do and what they are willing to sacrifice for the party, instead of oratory skills.

 

"This is not for yourself... It's not just showmanship. What is more important is the commitment to struggle and to fight for the party and the community," said Liow.

 

If the debate does take place, Ong and Gan will go in with the advantage as both are experienced speakers and have been involved in public debates with the opposition party.

 

As for Ong, he said that he will "definitely" make time if the debate was organised.

 

The MCA presidential election will take place this Saturday, involving a three-corner fight. With only five days to go, no one has thus far offered to organise the debate.
