Despite being faced with accusations by the government of being a Shiite, PAS’ deputy president Mohamad Sabu has been appointed as the Penang PAS commissioner, weeks after the state PAS chapter claimed that the state government was interfering in Islamic affairs.

However, PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali, in announcing this, told a press conference at the PAS headquarters today that the move was not to “sideline” previous state commissioner Salleh Man.

Salleh’s deputy Fauzi Yusoff went as far to threaten that PAS would quit all state government posts if the situation persisted.

Salleh and Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng have both denied the allegations, while stressing that the two parties “will work it out”.

The appointment of Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu ( right ), could be seen as a way to sooth the relationship with Penang PAS and also the state government, as he is seen to be close to Lim Guan Eng.

Mat Sabu himself branded the change as a “normal” procedure that takes place in every organisation.

Meanwhile, Asmuni Awi has been appointed as the party’s new treasurer replacing Ahmad Yaakob, who had requested to be relieved of the position of treasurer due to commitments as Kelantan menteri besar and also Kelantan PAS commissioner.
