Residents of Kampung Kebun, Pengkalan Kubor in Tumpat were today shaken by 10-minute long firecracker explosions from a lorry at a storage area belonging to the Customs Department.

The incident at 1.10pm yesterday resulted in slight injuries to two women and a three-year-old boy who tried to escape to save themselves.

No loss of life or damage to property of residents was reported in the chain explosions which reverberated until 5km away. The storage facility for seized goods is located about 10 metres from the residents’ houses.

A resident, Nurul Izzah Yaacob, 24, who is heavily pregnant, said she was resting on the first floor of her house when she was shaken by the explosions.

“Subsequently, the explosions sounded louder and I alerted my husband who was in the room, to save ourselves.

“I am fortunate to have not been seriously injured which can affect my pregnancy,” said Nurul Izzah.

Another resident, Che Asiah Mohamed, 59, said initially the explosions sounded like that of firecrackers but they became louder.

“I ran to save myself and fell down the stairs. As a result, I hurt my right leg which has become swollen,” she said.

State Customs director Azis Yacub, when contacted, confirmed the incident but declined to comment further.
