Several non-governmental organisations staged a protest before lodging a report at the Pekan Police District Headquarters today over the planned anti-government rally in Kuala Lumpur on the new year's eve.

They are made up of the Pekan Umno Youth division, village and development committee, pensioners association, ex-policemen association, ex-servicemen association, single mothers association, farmers association, fishermen association, 4B Youth, Kelab Anak Wawasan Pekan (Kawan), and Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs (MAYC).  

"We have gathered here today to protest against the so-called rally to overthrow the government as we are worried of untoward incident if the police do not take stern action against the instigators and allowed it to take place," Pekan Umno Youth information chief Asmayudim Uyub told reporters today.  

He said the NGOs strongly condemned any attempt to incite the people to take to the streets to overthrow a democratically elected government.  

Pekan branch of the Malaysian Ex-Servicemen Association deputy chief Lt Col (Rtd) Zulkiffly Mohd Tahir said action should be taken not only against the organisers but also bloggers and social sites which had been campaigning for the rally before things get out of hands.   

"People who love peace should prevent a coup through street protests which could disrupt harmony and public order, and create chaos in the country," he added.

Meanwhile in Hulu Terengganu, 30 members of the Hulu Terengganu Youth Council and five non-governmental organisations (NGOs) lodged six reports against organisers of the planned anti-government rally at the Hulu Terengganu Police District Headquarters today.

Hulu Terengganu Youth District Council chairperson Nik Azman Nik Abdul Razak said the NGOs involved were 4B Youth, Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs (MAYC), Boys Scout, Peninsular Malay Students Association (GPMS) and Hulu Terengganu Felda Youth Council.

He said the organisers should think of the consequences of such rally as it would cause public disorder and tarnish the image of the country.

"The rally is unwarranted as there are avenues for them to voice out dissenting views," he said, adding such action would poison the minds of young people.

T’gganu top cop: Don’t attend rally

Terengganu CID chief ACP K Manoharan advised the public not to entertain any invitation to join the rally, be it through phone calls or text messages.

"Those who participate in the rally can be deemed to have committed an offence under Section 24 C of the Penal Code for trying to topple the legally-formed government.

"It's okay if they want to celebrate the new year, but don't participate in the rally," he told reporters here today.

In Kota Baharu, two Islamic oriented NGOs, Minda Pondok and Ikatan Cendekiawan Islam Kelantan also opposed the rally.

Minda Pondok religious action bureau chairman Mohd Syamsul Mohd Yusoff said Islam forbids Muslims to overthrow a legitimate government chosen by the people through an election by violence.

"If we look from religious perspective, it is morally wrong to overthrow a legitimate government, and it is not good to hold an illegal assembly as it will only cause more harm," he told reporters.

Ikatan Cendekiawan Islam Kelantan activist Mohd Zawawi Awang said a call to overthrow the government by anarchy and violence would only create chaos in the country.
