One of the groups who called for the Dec 31 rally against price hikes plans to sue the government over claims that organisers planned to overthrow the government on that night.

Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) said the rally that saw at least 10,000 participants "proceeded peacefully and there were no injuries, and the government was not 'overthrown'".

"The police accused SAMM and several NGOs of attempting to organise a "gathering to overthrow the government', and it has been shown the allegation is reckless and ill-conceived," said SAMM propaganda director Edy Noor Reduan ( right ) in a statement.

"We will begin legal action as soon as possible to clear the name of SAMM," he said.

On New Year's Eve Kuala Lumpur's Dataran Merdeka was flooded with protestors against the deluge of price hikes that the government has implemented.

The protestors, dressed in black, flooded the venue for the annual countdown celebrations causing the organisers of the party to black out as the clock approached midnight.

Edy also denied media reports that any of the protestors had climbed onto the stage, saying that the New Year’s Eve concert was stopped after protestors moved onto the field but had remained calm.

 

Nevertheless, he said the concert, which he claimed to cost RM15 million, should be stopped by the people.

 

“This is because at a time many are affected by the increasing cost of living, a government agency wastes the people’s money anyway.

 

“New Year celebrations should be more modest,” he said.
