PAS Ulama chief Harun Taib has reportedly told Christians to convert to Islam if they want to use the word 'Allah'.

"If they feel they want to use the word 'Allah' even though the court has banned its use by Christians, they should change their religion and convert to Islam," he was quoted as saying in a report today by Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia .

"If it is confirmed they have converted to Islam, there will be no problem for them to use 'Allah' as there are no restrictions," he was reported telling the daily.

He was reportedly responding to the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) raid on the Bible Society of Malaysia , confiscating 351 Malay and Iban language bibles that use the word 'Allah' for God.

Harun differed from other opposition leaders in consistently supporting the government's efforts to stop non-Muslims from using the word in the religious texts.

Meanwhile, several Muslim NGOs also condemned three DAP state assemblypersons for proposing to amend the Selangor Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988 that restricts non-Muslims' use of the word 'Allah'.

The assemblypersons, namely Damansara Utama's Yeo Bee Yin, Bukit Gasing's R Rajiv and Kampung Tunku's Lau Weng San want the law amended to prevent Islamic authorities from overstepping into the affairs of other religions.

However, Malaysian Syarie Lawyer Association Musa Awang dismissed the proposal, claiming the law is already based on the federal constitution.

"Why does the law need to be amended when its source is from the federal constitution?

"In fact we should demand other states which still fo not have this enactment to introduce it," he was quoted as saying in a separate Utusan Malaysia report.

Meanwhile, Pertubuhan Pembela-Pembela Islam (Pembela) accused the trio's action of being an attempt to undermine Islam.

"They want to spread other religions and make sure that Jais cannot act against them," he was quoted as saying.
