The authorities have expressed fears over the possibility of another landslide in Bukit Tunku facing Jalan Mahameru if it rains in the evening today.

“If that happens, we will instruct Kuala Lumpur City Hall to close that stretch of Jalan Mahameru,” said Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department chief of the operations centre, Samsol Maarif Saibani.

He spoke of this scenario if the removal of the earth that cascaded down the slope during yesterday’s landslide could not be done quickly enough before the rain came.

Samsol said a contractor was removing the earth and the Fire and Rescue Department was monitoring the slope.

No soil movement had been detected so far, he told reporters at the scene.

Samsol said fire and rescue personnel were laying sheets of canvas on the slope to prevent rainwater from seeping into the soil and triggering another landslide.

He advised motorists to be careful at the stretch - from the Parliament building to the Putra World Trade Centre - where two of the three lanes were reopened to traffic this morning.

The landslide occurred at 5.20pm yesterday following heavy rain, forcing the closure of that stretch of Jalan Mahameru and leading to a traffic jam that stretched for more than 10 kilometres.
